OrderGate vs Shopify Protect: Rule Builder — which one blocks your problem

If your store runs Shopify Payments and the problem is card fraud, start with Shopify Protect: Rule Builder, it is Shopify's own tool and it works from payment-risk signals OrderGate cannot see. If your store takes cash on delivery, bank transfer or a local gateway, is outside Shopify Payments, or the problem is a specific person you want refused however they pay, OrderGate is built for that: a rule on their email, phone, name, address or location, refused at checkout before an order or a payment exists.

Two different moments to block

Shopify Protect: Rule Builder screens a payment. Its listing says you choose the signals that matter, then decide what happens: block the order, request 3D Secure, or hold it for review. Those are decisions about a card transaction, which is why the app is priced per screened transaction and sits with Shopify Payments.

OrderGate decides whether a specific buyer may finish checkout at all. It runs inside Shopify's checkout validation function, which sees what is typed at checkout: email, phone, name, delivery address, and the signed-in customer's tags. A matching buyer is refused before an order exists and before any payment method is chosen, so it works the same for cash on delivery, bank transfer, a local gateway, or a store in a country where Shopify Payments is not offered.

What each one lists, as of 30 October 2026

  • Shopify Protect: Rule Builder — launched 27 October 2026, by Shopify, with the Fall '26 Edition. Free to install, then $0.07 per screened transaction. Custom rules that block, request 3DS or hold risky orders; a preview of a rule's impact on the last 90 days of orders before it goes live; alerts when a rule's results shift; reusable lists of emails, IPs and more; results tracked in Shopify Analytics. One review at the time of writing. The listing's compatibility box names the stores it supports; open it on the listing for the current list.
  • Shopify Protect itself — the chargeback-protection program the rule builder belongs to. Shopify's help page describes it for stores in the United States with a United States Shopify Payments account, covering eligible orders. Shopify's Fraud Control app, the older home of checkout rules, states that its checkout rules are only available for merchants using Shopify Payments.
  • OrderGate — new, with few reviews so far. Free: 2 exact-email or phone rules at a time, log-only and enforce (terms since 30 October 2026). Standard $9/month or $86/year: every rule type, up to 1,500 rules, hiding cash on delivery and free shipping for matching buyers. No per-transaction fee and no cap on blocks. Works with or without Shopify Payments.

Where Shopify Protect: Rule Builder is the stronger choice

  • Card fraud on Shopify Payments: it reads payment-risk signals at authorization, can ask for 3D Secure instead of refusing, and can hold an order for a human look. OrderGate has no payment signals and only one answer, refuse or allow.
  • Backtesting: it previews a rule against the last 90 days of orders. OrderGate's log-only mode reports what a rule would have stopped from recent orders, but it is a running count, not a per-rule replay.
  • Cost at low volume: 100 screened transactions a month is $7. A store on Shopify Payments with a few hundred orders a month pays about what OrderGate's Standard plan costs, from the vendor that also runs its checkout.
  • Reporting: rule results sit in Shopify Analytics next to sales.

Where OrderGate is the stronger choice

  • No Shopify Payments: cash on delivery, bank transfer, iyzico, PayTR, Paymob, Fawry, Mercado Pago, Razorpay or any other gateway. There is no payment screening to run on an order that will be paid at the door, so a rule builder tied to payments has nothing to decide; OrderGate refuses the buyer before that point.
  • A named person: one phone number, matched however it is typed; one email, a wildcard pattern, a whole domain; a name; a street address; a country, state, city or postal prefix; a customer tag. The buyer sees a rejection message you wrote, under the field that matched.
  • Watch before you block: every rule starts in log-only mode and reports what it would have stopped, and the rule tester checks an address against the saved rules before it goes live.
  • Flat price: $9 a month on Standard however many checkouts your rules evaluate. On a store with thousands of orders a month, per-transaction screening costs more than that.
  • Shopify Flow: a Flow action adds a block from an event, for example a chargeback or a refused delivery, without opening the app.

Using both

They do not overlap much. A store on Shopify Payments that also has repeat offenders can let Rule Builder screen the payment and OrderGate refuse the people it already knows. Shopify allows up to 25 checkout validation functions on a store, so the two do not conflict. A store that cannot use Shopify Protect, because of its country or its payment setup, runs OrderGate alone.
